At the mouth of the Grey River sits Greymouth, the geographic and industrial heart of the West Coast.  Discover the areas fascinating heritage at Shantytown, relax at the Monteith’s Brewery or take a ride on the scenic Tranz Alpine train through the Southern Alps voted one of the world’s best train rides.  Take a coastal drive south to the Punakaki pancake rocks.  This is one of “Lonely Planet’s” most scenic drives and at sunset, breathtaking.   

Visit the town of Hokitika for some authentic whitebait fritters and some out of this world food at the world renowned Wild Foods Festival.  Discover the Treetop Walkway, glow worm caves and the iconic Kiwi bird at the National Kiwi Centre. 

Further south you enter a whole new world of adventure at the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, glaciers that journey through the middle of the rainforest.  Get up close and personal by walking to, flying over and hiking on these amazing glaciers.  This area is a natural wonder with ample activities such as hiking, rafting, climbing and viewing an abundance of wildlife and birdlife.
