Qualmark is a joint venture between Tourism New Zealand (the New Zealand government tourism organisation) and the New Zealand Automobile Association.

Qualmark was set up in 1994, specifically to operate an independent classification and grading system for the New Zealand tourism industry. Its purpose is to provide independent assessment of tourism products so that visitors can make informed choices about where to stay and what to do.

Qualmark has established grading systems for holiday parks, hotels, and motels, and accreditation systems for shopping and other tourism services.

Participation in the Qualmark system is voluntary, however, all parks in the Kiwi Holiday Parks group are required to have – or be actively working towards – a Qualmark grading.

Properties displaying the Qualmark sign are visited each year by Qualmark assessors who do a detailed evaluation of the facilities and services. Based on that evaluation, a star grading is assigned.

There are five levels of grading:

One Star

Meets minimum Qualmark standards and provides clean, comfortable and hospitable accommodation

Two Stars

Exceeds Qualmark minimum requirements, providing a wider range of facilities and services than a one star grading

Three Stars

Provides a good range of facilities and services

Four Stars

Provides a high standard of facilities and services

Five Stars

Best available in New Zealand

At each star level, some operators excel in the range and quality of the facilities and in the service and overall hospitality provided. The excellence is recognised by a "plus" (+) after their star rating.
