Kiwi Christmas Events
As a nation of Christmas lovers, New Zealanders love celebrating the “silly season” in a number of ways. Whether it’s a close community, a vibrant region or bustling city, there will be plenty of things to do and see during December. There’s nothing quite like a Kiwi Christmas – the sun, companionable feeling in the air, and the coming together of communities and people, all make for a truly special experience.
Santa parades
Every year, both children and adults alike look forward to their local Santa parade. Usually held down the main street or road of the town or city, spectators flock to see community groups, artists and actors, clowns, costumed characters, representatives from the emergency services and local councils, scouts and girl guides, and of course the man in red himself. There are elaborate floats, marches, bands and flags, and these all make for an exciting and festive atmosphere that everyone loves.
Kid’s programs and holiday fun
Look out for great activities hosted by local councils, libraries or community groups that cater to kids. Your young (or not so young) ones will enjoy going on scavenger hunts, watching performers, or participating in Christmas themed arts and crafts for a very small cost, if not for free.
Don’t forget to make a trip to the local mall to meet Santa, have a photo and tell him what you’d like for Christmas.
Follow the light trail
All around the country during December, people, streets and neighbourhoods dress up their homes with lights, decorations and more. You’ll be amazed at the effort some go to in order to create true masterpieces. Many have garden trails and allow visitors through both the front and back gardens, plus some owners stay outside for a while handing out candy or treats for children. Check out the local paper for a map of the lit-up homes in your area and have a great time wandering and visiting.
Head to a concert
Concerts in the park, movies under the stars, carols by candlelight – no matter where you are, you’ll be close to Christmas events. Our top picks include Christmas at the Races events throughout the country, Christmas at the Bowl in New Plymouth on the 20th of December, Christmas at the Park at the Auckland Domain on the 12th of December, the Wellington Christmas markets every Saturday from the 5th of December, and the New Brighton Christmas Parade on the 12th of December.
Whatever you do and however you celebrate the holidays, have a great time with Kiwi Holiday Parks and have a wonderful and safe Christmas and New Year.
Look forward to seeing you soon!
