Kaikoura Must Do's

12 Aug 2013

Kaikoura is in a bountiful sealife situation, combining a deep water trench (which the sperm whales feed in) with a converging current from the south, bringing with it lots of nutrients that the sealife thrive on. From krihl to fish (large and small) to octopus, squid, seals, sharks, stingrays, orca, dolphins and of course the whales.

Sperm whales are here year round, but Kaikoura also has Wright Whales & Blue Whales sightings.  Dolphin and Seal swimming is popular with large quantities of both.  Fishing charters operate year-round, nobody goes home empty handed!

With the Seawood Kaikoura mountain ranges so close, snow skiing/boarding at Mt Lyford (a small and un-crowded field)  through winter months, and in the summer, great tramping, mountain biking, hunting and bush walks

Then of course there’s the Crayfish to eat, with most restaurants with seafood on the menu.
