NEW PLYMOUTH |
Puke Ariki | The essence of Puke Ariki is learning about who we are, where we come from and where we are going.
This quest for knowledge is so important that people throughout Taranaki and New Zealand have embraced the spirit of Puke Ariki and flown with it.
The result is an inspiring, two-wing complex that soars high in the heart of New Plymouth. Even the location is telling, for Puke Ariki means Hill of Chiefs and was once the most important Maori site in Taranaki.
Our knowledge centre is the first of its type in New Zealand and maybe the world. That's because it houses a full public library, museum and visitor information centre, which flow from one to another through the sharing of knowledge. An airbridge joins the two buildings, in the same way this website allows you to link to the endless resources available.
Through the use of new technology, we are able to bring Taranaki to the world and the world to Taranaki.
No matter your age, culture or background, you will find the search for information fascinating, fulfilling and fun. Puke Ariki is a celebration of the different people and groups who encircle Mount Taranaki.
And it's a focal point to express our stories, our truths and our pride of place.
This is us.
